The event connects veterans with resources they may need and brings awareness to what is available to them, said Angela Miller, homeless program coordinator with the VA Medical Center.

Veterans were able to get a hot meal, haircuts, basic medical screenings, job and housing referrals and information about benefits, assistance programs, among other services. Veterans and their furry friends were also joined by live entertainment from Free Hand the Band, made up of only veterans, along with DJ Patty Hamilton.

Miller added, 人妖色情片淥ur ultimate goal is to ensure that every veteran has a place to call home.人妖色情片�

The center provides veterans who are homeless and at risk of homelessness with one-stop access to community-based, multiagency services to promote permanent housing, health and mental health care, career development and access to VA and non-VA benefits, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs news release said.

Paul Preece, one veteran who attended Wednesday人妖色情片檚 event, was enlisted in 1981 where he served in Korea, Fort Knox and Germany until 1987. Preece started using The VA Homeless Program人妖色情片檚 CRRC resources over five years ago when a fellow veteran told him about it, he said. Preece said the center helped him get back on his feet when he was trying to get his house back after losing it to the land bank, and his wife died shortly after getting it back.

人妖色情片淢y house got broken into, the wires got stolen off the outside of the house, tools got stolen... It was a struggle,人妖色情片� Preece said. 人妖色情片淭hese girls here helped me get my feet on the ground.人妖色情片�

Preece said the center is something many veterans don人妖色情片檛 know exists, but it provides food, clothing, laundry rooms, showers and more to veterans.

人妖色情片淭hey care for you more than just a client, they care for the human,人妖色情片� Preece said. 人妖色情片淲hen you人妖色情片檙e going through something, they人妖色情片檙e right there with you.人妖色情片�

Brian Nimmo, director of the Hershel 人妖色情片淲oody人妖色情片� Williams VA Medical Center, said the stand down event is important for not only unsheltered veterans but all veterans who may need to get connected to mental health resources or get more information on receiving benefits.

During his 10 years with the medical center, Nimmo said he has seen the stand down events change the lives of many veterans.

人妖色情片淧eople that are engaged in mental health care are much less likely to commit suicide than those that are not,人妖色情片� Nimmo said. 人妖色情片淲e see that that人妖色情片檚 exponential in the veterans community and veterans are committing suicide at a rate greater than the general population. So getting them in these programs is truly life changing.人妖色情片�

Approximately 50 volunteers gave out resources to veterans, including Terry Cunningham, president of The West Virginia Gold Star Mothers, whose son, Staff Sgt. Robert T. Cunningham of the West Virginia National Guard, died in 2018.

Cunningham said Gold Star Mothers, based in Charleston, were founded to support and to aid veterans to community service from mothers who lost children in active duty. Cunningham said the group help veterans in many ways including help pay bills, help with rent and more recently helped get a hot water tank put in for a veteran who had cold water for two years, she said.

At Wednesday人妖色情片檚 stand down event Cunningham and first vice president of the Gold Star Mothers Rose Shilling whose son Heath Shilling, an aviation mechanic in the Navy, gave out shirts and socks to veterans.

人妖色情片淲e see all these folks that, you know, maybe are homeless veterans and they depend on these kinds of things and the supplies that they might need and we wonder why we人妖色情片檙e not taking better care of our people that are homeless veterans that have served our country,人妖色情片� Cunningham said.

Cunningham said the event is important for unsheltered veterans who may not know where to go get setup with resources to get back on their feet such as community colleges and Habitat for Humanity who also attended the event.

Cunningham said joining the event and being a part of the Gold Star Mothers also helps her, Shilling and other Gold Star Mothers keep their children人妖色情片檚 memories alive.

人妖色情片淚t helps me a lot when we do these events,人妖色情片� Cunningham said. 人妖色情片淚 want to honor them and it makes me feel good, and it makes me feel like I人妖色情片檓 helping them to live because we say their names. We just keep moving forward and moving on and we remember our kids with joy. I remember the funny stuff. I refuse to remember the sad parts and it helps with the grieving process.人妖色情片�

Veterans who missed the stand down event but wish to receive resources from the Community Referral & Resource Center can visit them at 624 9th St. or by phone at 304-429-6755.

Miller said the stand down events are arranged yearly in the medical center人妖色情片檚 24 county catchment area, including 10 in West Virginia, 12 in eastern Kentucky, two in Ohio. Six were scheduled this year.

• Friday Sept. 27, in Logan, West Virginia
• Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Ashland, Kentucky
