HUNTINGTON 人妖色情片 The oldest publicly owned cemetery in Huntington will celebrate its 150th anniversary this weekend with a special event organized to honor its history.
Spring Hill Cemetery will have a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the cemetery, 1427 Norway Ave. The event will include self-guided historical tours and exhibits, informative tents set up in various sections of the cemetery and guides to provide historical insights and answer questions about the cemetery人妖色情片檚 heritage, and refreshments.
Winners of the cemetery人妖色情片檚 photo contest will be announced during the anniversary event. The Spring Hill Cemetery photo contest that started on Aug. 19, 2024, and ends on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, will feature categories celebrating the cemetery人妖色情片檚 scenic and historical aspects.
Eldora McCoy, cemeteries operations manager for the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District, said the cemetery holds much of Huntington人妖色情片檚 history.

The cemetery is the final resting place for many figures who were integral parts of Huntington人妖色情片檚 making such as Delos Emmons, the brother-in-law of Collis P. Huntington and Charles Ritter, whom Ritter Park is named after. Ritter donated 20 acres of land for the creation of the park.
Confederate Gen. Albert Gallatin Jenkins and Union General John Hunt Oley are also buried on the grounds. The Pallottine Missionary Sisters, who established St. Mary人妖色情片檚 Hospital (now Medical Center), also have a section in the cemetery.
Although the first official burial was of Josephine Webb in 1873, there are several older unofficial graves, the earliest being Elizabeth Prosser in 1838, McCoy said. When the first burial was recorded, the cemetery was 29.8 acres and was located outside the city limits. Today, the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District owns and maintains the land. Since its inception the cemetery has grown to 110 acres, surrounded by Huntington neighborhoods.
The cemetery is also the final resting place for over 300 Civil War veterans, union soldiers and confederate soldiers人妖色情片 sections.
The cemetery is the burial site of several of the Marshall football team members who died in the 1970 plane crash. The Marshall Memorial is also located on the ground人妖色情片檚 northwest promontory. It was dedicated in 1971 to those who died in the crash.
The Paul Ambrose Trail for Health (PATH), a wellness trail dedicated to Dr. Paul Ambrose, winds through Spring Hill Cemetery. Ambros is buried at the cemetery. He was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon. Ambrose, who also has a Memorial Bell Tower at the cemetery, is honored every year during the park districts Patriot Day ceremony on Sept. 11.
The cemetery also lies Mary Eloise Hughes Smith, Titanic survivor: Revella Hughes, a performer and was activist in the national Black movement: Frederick G. L. Beuhring, an early entrepreneur in the shipping industry and was an early sheriff, magistrate and co-founder of Marshall College: James L. Caldwell, the first president of the 1st National Bank, and builder of the Huntington Electric Railway, according to Cabell County Doors to the Past website.
