HUNTINGTON ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ” A Huntington-based adult kickball league donated $750 to the Fairfield U Mentor Program during its 16th Championship Tournament Sunday at the Old Olympic Pools fields in Ritter Park.
The Jewel City Kickball League is a 501c(7) nonprofit social organization with more than 200 players on multiple teams in the league that play through the summer on Sunday afternoons, ultimately competing for the Paul Martin Memorial Cup.
League President Zach Garrett said that the cup is named after kickballer Paul Martin, who died in 2013.
Garrett said the league provides an opportunity to give back to the community. In addition to having fun and healthy competition, he said, all residual funds held by the league are donated to local organizations at the end of each season.
This year, the league donated $750 to HuntingtonÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ™s Fairfield U Mentor Program, which matches children ages 12-18 from the Fairfield community with Marshall University medical students to ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬœintegrate medical students with the community while providing student mentees with valuable, fun, educational opportunities,ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ according to the program website.
The league chose the mentor program because, Garrett said, it is essential to partner children in the community with mentors early on in life, exposing them to opportunities they might not have otherwise.
Ten teams competed during the championship on Sunday, with winners Camo Energy taking home the Paul Martin Memorial Cup, Garrett said.
The league was founded in 2009 when a small group of its founding members discovered few options for recreational adult activities in Huntington. Garrett, who came to Huntington in 2005, said the league helped him establish lifelong friendships in the city.
ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬœMy favorite part is the sense of community,ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ he said. ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬœEveryone shows up the first day and takes the time to meet and get to know each other.ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ
