PORTSMOUTH, Ohio ÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ” A Portsmouth man was arrested over the weekend for charges related to the shooting of a sheriffÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ™s deputy, according to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman.
Michael Bishop, 39, of Liberty Avenue, Portsmouth, was charged with attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of having weapons while under disability (being a felon with a gun) tampering with evidence, inducing panic and obstruction of official business, Thoroughman said.
The sheriffÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ™s department received a call Saturday night about a man pointing a gun at a resident of Liberty Avenue. The deputy responding was shot and transported to Ohio State Medical Center in Columbus.
He was treated there and released. He will require further medical treatment for his injuries, Thoroughman said.
The Liberty Avenue residence was searched by SWAT, but Bishop was not in the house. Officers received a tip that Bishop was to meet an individual at the Wheelersburg ballfield on Dogwood Ridge, near the Marathon Convenient Mart, later that day to flee the area, according to a news release.
Additional law enforcement, including sheriffÈËÑýÉ«ÇéƬ™s deputies, Portsmouth police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and New Boston police also responded to the search for a suspect, according to the release.
A drone also was used to search for the suspect. Deputies were advised the suspect could be armed with two handguns and an AR-style rifle with multiple magazines, the release states.
Law enforcement officials set up surveillance near the ballpark, and Bishop was located in a restroom. A negotiator was used to talk Bishop into surrendering without incident, according to the release.
Bishop was transported to the Scioto County Jail. The investigation is ongoing, Thoroughman said.
